Junkers Ju 88

Diving on the wreck site

Wreck of a Junkers 88 multirole combat aircraft from World War II lies in Gdańsk Bay, 2 miles from the port of Hel towards Jastarnia, at a depth of forty meters. It rests on a flat, muddy bottom. The fuselage of the aircraft is upside down. Cockpit and tail are missing. The right wing is broken off at the end. The “Balkenkreuz” (bar cross) is visible on the left wing. In the middle section, parts of the landing gear and a rubber fuel tank bladder are visible protruding from the fuselage. In the axis of the fuselage on the side of the broken tail, about 15 meters behind the wreck, there is a Continental aircraft tire with an inner tube visible inside. The tire has markings embossed in the rubber. The Junkers wreck is small, but it is an interesting dive site among the shipwrecks that are usually dived in the waters of the Gdańsk Bay.
